Today, Director Walters joined Virginia Attorney General Jerry Kilgore in Troutville, Virginia to discuss new state and Federal efforts to combat the spread of meth abuse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Leaders in Virginia are taking the drug problem seriously and taking action. Last year, Attorney General Kilgore announced a proactive partnership between retail merchants in Virginia and the Attorney General’s office to combat the growing problem of meth production and distribution throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia through the Meth Watch program. Many retailers such as Costco, Wal-Mart, and Food Lion, Walgreens Eckerd, and 7-11 have already signed on. Tim Lucas, owner of the "Downhome Pharmacy" in Troutville, Virginia also participates in the program and hosted a news conference today to spread the word about how meth is produced and how to prevent manufacturers from obtaining the necessary ingredients.

To complement State efforts to stem the flow and abuse of Meth, Director Walters outlined details of the National Synthetic Drugs Action Plan. This plan outlines a balanced approach focused on four core areas: prevention, treatment, regulation of chemicals and drugs, and law enforcement.
